Project to design the first and basement floor of a building for a contemporary art gallery. The first floor is 2m wide x 12m length, and the basement floor is 3m wide x 20m length, that are connected by an internal straight staircase. Large beams are continuous in the girder direction at intervals of 2 m, especially at the basement floor, which is only 2,450 mm below the beams, and many building infrastructure pipes pass under them.
It was requested to create a simple gallery space where you could enjoy the art calmly away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Therefore, we first focused on making the "White Cube" as neutral as possible by hiding the existing skeleton and piping with minimal finishing. After that, sharp stainless steel fixtures were placed at key points to make the space more attractive. On the basement floor, indirect lighting was used to make the space between the beams look like lighting in order to eliminate the strong presence of beams. The light smoothly goes around the entire area between the beams whose edges are finished with R, so that the depth of the pocket disappears and the space could be felt larger than it actually is.
Despite the small size restrictions, I believe that it has become an art gallery that firmly support the special moments where visitors and art meet.
